How to stand up for yourself

There are many situations in which a person should show more firmness. For example, when your friend constantly borrows money from you and has never returned it during. Or when the boss reported you in a rude form at colleagues. But not everyone manages to show this most firmness at the time of the conflict. But after the conflict ended in the head, the correct words that you did not utter immediately come. But there are a few rules on how to behave in such situations in order to adequately rebuff the offender and stand up for yourself.

How to stand up for yourself

Watch out for body language

When a conflict starts, and they start scolding and insulting you, your body starts to speak for you. You still didn’t have time to say a word in response, but you are already starting to actively “talk” with sign language. This can manifest itself in a shrug of the shoulders, a nod of the head, in an apologetic smile. Such gestures immediately weaken your defense. They indicate that you are starting to give up, without even having time to answer the offender. Therefore, it is important to learn how to control these gestures. Straighten your back and look the offender straight in the eyes. You shouldn’t interrupt him. Wait for him to say everything he wanted to say. After he speaks out, you need to start defending your point of view. Do it in a calm tone. Also, if he starts interrupting you in a polite way, remind him that you also have the right to express your opinion.

Watch what you say

You should speak in the first person, while trying to start your speech with phrases such as “I disagree / agree”, “I think” and so on. All this will help not to forget about the subject of the dispute, and also will not make it possible to draw other people into the conflict who have nothing to do with it. At the moment of conflict, how should you not apologize and admit that you are wrong. You can do this a little later, when everything “cools down”.

Watch your intonation

Intonation is also very important. Not only what you say is important, but also how you say it. Your voice must not tremble. No need to speak softly and quietly. You must be well heard. Try to speak in a steady, firm voice. Also state your point of view clearly and calmly.

See to it that the situation has reached its logical conclusion

Remember that the last word should always stay with you. Offer some kind of conflict or compromise. Perhaps you can find a way out that you would arrange you and your offender.
