Cable orders are often discussed as if the job ends when the electrical specification is approved. On site, however, a perfectly compliant cable can still waste hours if the drum is too large for the access route, the cut length leaves no termination allowance, or the labels do not match the pulling schedule. The installation crew experiences the order as reels, routes and terminations—not as a line in a quotation.
Walk the route before choosing the drum
Begin at the delivery point and follow the cable all the way to its final termination. Note gate width, lifting limits, basement turns, shaft access, tray height and the position of the payoff stand. A drum that fits the truck may not fit the service lift or the plant-room doorway.
This simple walk-through also reveals whether one long factory length is actually useful. In some buildings, smaller drums reduce handling risk and make it easier to stage work floor by floor. On an open industrial site, a longer continuous length may eliminate a joint and save labour. The right answer depends on the route, not on a standard packing preference.
Cut length needs more than a drawing measurement
A route length taken from a plan rarely includes every rise, bend, approach to equipment and termination tail. Add the allowances required by the installer and keep them visible in the cutting schedule. If several similar runs are involved, label each one by circuit or destination instead of relying only on length.
Too little cable creates an obvious problem. Too much can be costly as well: heavy surplus must be handled, stored or scrapped, and an oversized coil near equipment may violate the intended installation method. Review the schedule with the person responsible for pulling and terminating before production starts.
Match construction to the actual installation
Conductor size and voltage class are only the beginning. Indoor tray, buried duct, exposed outdoor route, moving machinery and high-temperature areas create different demands for sheath material, flexibility, armour, UV resistance, water resistance and flame performance. Bending radius and pulling tension deserve particular attention when the route contains several changes of direction.

Make factory testing easy to connect to the delivered reels
Ask how production batches, test reports and drum numbers are linked. Receiving staff should be able to match a reel to its length, cable designation and inspection record without opening every package. For project work, agree on the report format before manufacturing; chasing documents after shipment is a common and avoidable delay.
Drum details belong in the purchase order
Record maximum drum diameter, width, gross weight, lifting method, rolling direction, flange protection and weatherproofing. Confirm whether the reel will be returned, recycled or kept on site. These details may look secondary during sourcing, but they determine whether warehouse and installation teams can handle the delivery safely.
Plan the handover like part of the installation
A practical cable handover includes the approved datasheet, cutting schedule, drum list, test records and storage guidance. The site team should know which reel feeds which route and whether any end needs sealing again after a partial cut. Clear identification reduces the chance that the right cable is pulled into the wrong circuit.
The most economical order is not simply the lowest price per metre. It is the order that arrives in usable lengths, on manageable drums, with traceable tests and enough information for the crew to work without improvising. Spending an hour on the route and reel plan can prevent a lost day during installation.
